Victoria’s nursery was covered in dust. Piles of boxes obscured the once cheerful yellow walls which, over the last sixteen years, had faded in brightness. Not that she minded—she definitely wouldn’t have chosen that color herself, but she couldn’t fault her parents for their good intentions. She picked her way through the cardboard city, wary of spiders, as her mother stumbled towards the other side of the room. “It’s around here somewhere…” she muttered.
“Are you sure?” Victoria had seen at least another twenty boxes in the garage last time she’d gone there. Considering her mother’s packrat tendencies, the book she was looking for could have been anywhere, attic included.
“Positive. I keep all my book stuff in the house.” Makoto yanked open a nearby box and peered inside. “Wow, check this out. First editions of The Hideous Truth.” She pulled out a hardcover novel and passed it to Victoria, who had to reach around a stack of boxes to take it from her. “That’s one of my personal favs.”
