February 3, 2006

One of the strangest things about coming back to church for Sebastian was feeling like he’d never left. Even though he’d spent just as many years avoiding church as he had attending it, his reconnection with old friends had been almost instantaneous, and the congregation members who’d last seen him as an awkward twelve-year-old welcomed him back with open arms. He’d just finished up a conversation with a girl he’d gone to elementary school with when he felt a tap on his shoulder. Jasmine stood behind him, smiling like she had a secret. “Hey,” she said. “Got a sec?”

“For you? Always,” Sebastian replied, though Luna had been waiting for him in the foyer for at least ten minutes now. “Great singing tonight, by the way.”

Jasmine’s smile widened. “That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. I was trying to come up with something I could get Luna for her birthday.”

“Besides teaching her and everyone she knows how to waltz?”

“She really likes my singing for some reason, so I thought I could give her that as a gift.”

Sebastian stuffed his hands into his hoodie pockets. “Have you contracted a sea witch to steal your voice and give it to Luna yet? I hear they don’t come cheap.”
